Is Your Home Infested with Rats? Key Signs to Watch For

Droppings

Small, dark pellets (1/2 to 3/4 inch long), usually found in drawers, cupboards, pantries, along baseboards, or under sinks.

Gnaw Marks

Rats chew constantly to wear down their teeth. Look for gnawed wood, wires, food packaging, or plastic

Grease Marks

Rats leave oily rub marks from their fur along walls, floors, or beams where they travel regularly.

Burrows or Holes

Look for small holes in walls, floors, behind appliances, or near foundations. Can also appear outdoors in dirt or near garbage areas.

Tracks or Footprints

Dusty or dirty areas might show footprints or tail drag marks. You can sprinkle flour or baby powder overnight to check for fresh tracks.

Noises at Night

Scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds, especially at night or in walls, ceilings, or under floorboards.

Strong Smell of Ammonia

Rat urine smells very strong and musky, especially in enclosed or infested areas.

Nests

Rats build nests out of shredded paper, fabric, or insulation. Often hidden in dark, undisturbed places like attics, wall cavities, basements, or behind stored items.

Pet Behavior

Cats or dogs becoming unusually alert, barking, or sniffing around walls or furniture may signal rat activity.
